The Benefits Of Hormone Replacement Therapy

March 24th, 2010

Women undergoing menopause or who are post-menopausal experience several different symptoms. The major treatment for menopause for short-term symptoms and long-term symptoms is hormone replacement therapy because menopause is the decreased production of estrogen. The aim is to increase the level of this hormone. This will explain in-depth the uses, advantages, and disadvantages of hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

An explanation of the types of symptoms that occur with menopause is important because there are different degrees of severity of these symptoms. The less severe a symptom is or can be, the less hormone replacement therapy is needed. For example, hot flashes are the most well-known symptoms of menopause. A prescription may last between 3-6 months, and the hot flashes will usually disappear after treatment.

Other symptoms which are associated with menopause include increased risk of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and atrophy of the target organ. The latter is easily treated with a topical estrogen cream to reduce any soreness or inflammation.

Hormone replacement therapy can be a treatment that causes severe effects if used long term. HRT has been used regularly although these risks occur. Two forms of HRT exist. One is with estrogen alone in the medication. This has two risks associated with it which are stroke and pulmonary embolus. These are clot-forming disorders in the blood vessels in the brain and lung, respectively. Progestin can also be added which is another hormone. These add 2 other risks on top of the previous two. Breast cancer and coronary heart disease are possible with progestin and estrogen combined.

Osteoporosis is a fairly common problem among elderly women, and it is an effect of menopause. HRT therapy was used in the past, but is used less now due to these significant side effects. There are alternatives which can be used to help prevent these side effects which are comparable in effectiveness.

For all types of issues related to menopause and HRT, talking to a doctor is the most important thing to get the most information. They can help decide whether it is the best treatment.

Hormone replacement therapy is necessary in cases of women who are post-menopausal as they can experience many symptoms due to the loss of estrogen. It is helpful to use this treatment for certain symptoms, but it is well-known that there are serious side effects to using these treatments. Talking to a physician is needed before starting HRT.
