Botox Is An Effective Option To Eliminate Facial Wrinkles

December 20th, 2010

A plastic surgery treatment called Botox was approved by the USA Food and Drug Administration in 2002. The procedure is an effective way to get rid of wrinkles and lines on the face. Wrinkling caused by environmental conditions, stress, and age respond excellently to the treatment. If you have wrinkles around the mouth, forehead, between your eyes, or at the base of your nose, Botox injections can give you a more youthful appearance.

Botulinum Toxin is linked to a serious illness called botulism which causes paralysis if ingested in large quantities. However, when injected in very small doses, this paralyzing effect has a positive outcome on weakening facial muscles. The injections prevent the muscles from contracting, thereby allowing them to soften and relax.

Botox is especially effective for lines around the eyes known as crow’s feet and wrinkles caused by frowning. It must be pointed out that wrinkling caused by sun damage does not respond positively to Botox. The process only takes a few minutes and it is not necessary to administer anesthesia.

Using a thin needle, the surgeon injects the substance into the appropriate muscles. Patients experience a small amount of discomfort and will start to see the effects in 3 to 7 days. To reduce bruising, all patients are told to avoid alcohol, anti-inflammatory drugs, and aspirin for a week prior to treatment.

After treatment, the effects usually last for from four to six months. As the effects wear off, the muscles slowly ‘awaken’ and lines and wrinkles start to return. Often, follow-up sessions produce better results because the muscles are used to being relaxed.

Bruising is the worst side-effect of this plastic surgery treatment. In very rare cases, there have been reports of short-term eye-drooping or temporary headaches. These can be avoided if the patient does not rub the treated area for 12 hours after the injections have been administered.

I found that, after calling a few plastic surgery clinics in my town, that there were several qualified surgeons to choose from, and you will probably have no problem finding several. I also found a few botox clinics that specialize in the procedure I am looking to have, so there are probably specialists for your procedure in your area.

Cosmetic Treatment Known As BOTOX

August 16th, 2010

BOTOX injections are the leading cosmetic treatment in the US. This is a million-dollar industry and Americans are getting injections of this facial filler on folds, wrinkles, lips, and lines. BOTOX got FDA approvals to treat everything from eye twitches to underarm sweats. But it is still used commonly for cosmetic improvements or to remove wrinkles.

How it Works

BOTOX is a toxin that is being produced by a bacterium called clostridium botulinum. When ingested in big amounts, it can cause botulism. Although one effect of botulism is paralysis, doctors and scientists have found ways to make it useful to treat human conditions and problems. Small amounts of it can be directly injected into the muscles to control their weakening.

An injection of BOTOX can be done in about ten to thirty minutes. It depends on the amount of injection and what the treatment areas are. The area that will be treated is numbed by using an anesthetic. Then BOTOX are injected in these predetermined areas in small controlled quantities. There will be minor pain and discomfort during the injection but these go away after the procedure has been done. BOTOX paralyzes the muscles of the face so the skin does not move or form wrinkles and in order to remove lines.

Risks and Complications

One of the more common complications of a BOTOX injection is eyelid drooping. If this happens, it is only temporary and can be gone within three weeks. This is caused by the migration of the BOTOX from the treatment area to the areas near it. This is the main reason why you are advised not to rub the area treated with BOTOX for at least 12 hours after the procedure. Patients are also reminded not to lie down within 3 to 4 hours after treatment.

BOTOX injections have their advantages and associated risks. Before going for a BOTOX treatment, try to get into the habit of maintaining a healthy skin. This prevents lines and wrinkles from appearing in the first place. But if you decided on a BOTOX injection, research on the doctor and the possible complications and side effects of the procedure. This is so you will be informed on what to expect from your BOTOX treatment.
