5 Tips For Fighting Off Insomnia For More Weight Loss

October 11th, 2010

Sleep is probably one of the most underrated aspects of modern day health. Yet countless people actually die on the road every single day because of sleep deprivation.

To make matters worse, in extreme cases, many people live their lives in constant lethargy as a result of misdiagnosed sleeping disorders. Are you sleeping well every night?

So, without further delay, here are 5 tips for fighting off insomnia:

1. Optimize your room: Your body produces melatonin when it’s time to go to bed. And one of the ways it kick-starts this production is with darkness and cool temperatures. So make sure your room is both dark and cold before you go to sleep. Just make sure you don’t make it too cold or else you will wake in the middle of the night.

2. Don’t let fake light hit your eyes before bed: Using a laptop or watching TV can not only cause emotional arousal before bed, but can also send false awake signals to your pineal gland. So make sure you minimize the use of electronics right before bed so that you don’t disrupt your sleeping cycles.

3. Block out noise: You could use ear plugs here. However, many times they will fall out and most of them are not very comfortable by any stretch of the imagination. I recommend getting a sound conditioner that can produce white noise so that you can sleep like a baby.

4. Don’t wrap yourself up like a mummy: When you first fall asleep you may not feel hot. However, as the night progresses and heat collects, you may begin to sweat. And recall that high temperatures make you more awake. Not good if you really want to sleep well.

5. Don’t wake up late on the weekends: Your internal biological clock is sensitive during the week and during weekends. Thus, every time you sleep in on the weekend, you are sending mixed signals to your biological clock. Thus, it behooves you to wake up and fall asleep at the same time all the time.

Now getting sleep is not only vital for your day to day living, but also vital to fight off serious disease like cancer. So please take action on the tips in this article sooner rather than later. You see, later usually never comes!

Hazards of Insomnia Drugs As Remedies for Sleeplessness

March 18th, 2010

You may have had all the good intentions in the world, with regard to trying to find an insomnia natural remedy rather than resorting to drugs. But if all the herbal teas, white noise generators and meditation sessions haven’t helped, and you’re barely functioning because of lack of sleep, then you may have no other choice but to ask for a prescription from your doctor. There are certain drugs that are definitely meant to be remedies for insomnia, and they should offer some help. However, you should be aware of some of the drawbacks of specific types of medication while you’re using them.

Cold medications can have a secondary function as remedies for insomnia, because they often induce drowsiness. They do produce side effects if they are used for too long, though, so they shouldn’t become what you rely on regularly.

Depression medications, too, often help cure insomnia, since it is sometimes a side effect of depression. But these medications shouldn’t be used just for insomnia; it should be clear that you have depression and that the sleeplessness is one of the results.

Other pharmaceutical drugs have been formulated specifically as sleeplessness remedies, and include drugs such as Ambien, Lunesta, Rozerem or Sonata. Just bear in mind that they can have uncomfortable side effects or even cause acute hypersensitive reactions. You might even be afflicted with unusual sleepwalking activities.

If you are an elderly individual, then each of these negative reactions are often worsened, so these particular drugs may not be the ideal sleeplessness remedy for your needs. That’s unfortunate, because getting older is certainly a factor in the occurrence of sleeplessness, as the body creates a reduced amount of melatonin. Yet you might wish to think about melatonin capsules prior to trying prescription drugs.

Doctors usually don’t recommend using drugs as remedies for insomnia on a long-term basis, both for fear of patients developing dependencies, and also worrying about the potential side effects. But sometimes it’s just not possible to let the sleeping problems continue their cycle for long, unless you are content not to function very well. When it’s absolutely necessary, and you’ve eliminated other physical ailments as causes, sometimes you just have to resort to prescription medications. But both you and your doctor need to keep their potential problems in mind, and keep an eye on your reactions to them.

The occasional sleepless night is not really a problem but if it becomes chronic insomnia then you have to do something about it. For example, many people who work an erratic schedule suffer from shift work sleep disorder on a constant basis. Visit the Sleep Remedies site to learn how to overcome the problem.
