The Health Care Reform Bill

March 29th, 2010

Barack Obama supports the Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act, and John McCain does as well. The Wellstone Act “mandates that group health plans provide mental health and substance-related disorder benefits that are at least equivalent to benefits offered for medical and surgical procedures.”

The Paul Wellstone Act is extremely important because is provides a very basic level of coverage for mental
health issues that maybe not be given (Daley, pg. 2). The voting records and public statements of John McCain and Barack Obama make it that clear the two administrations value the importance of mental illness in the
health care system, but Barack Obama has been more clear and concise in stating his case.

Barack Obama efforts in co-sponsoring the mental health parity act and mothers act shows he has devoted time and effort in mental health issues. John McCain has supported mental health acts and bills when they were in the majority but has not stepped up to cosponsor a bill.

Their proposals for health care reform impact the disabled community as a whole. Barack Obama’s proposal and voting record make it clear that would include mental health care in his affordable health care plan. An Obama administration would help to
bridge the gap between care for mental and physical health care. McCain’s proposal and voting record state that he is interested in mental health care.

However, he has not mentioned mental health in his health care proposal and has repeatedly stressed individual responsibility as opposed to shared responsibility in his public statements.

He has shown that has some reservations in regards to the share of responsibility his administration will take. Based on the voting records and public statements, Obama, the
candidate who has presented a stronger case for mental health care has won the election, but it will be up to his execution on his ideas that will decide the next step for mental
health in America.

Performing Occupational Therapy Jobs In Different Locations

March 26th, 2010

Jobs in Occupational therapy field is a career that provides different types of treatment that benefits patients suffering either from disabling conditions affecting them mentally, physically, developmentally or emotionally. These patients basically need assistance to get back to living active and independent lives.

The occupational therapy job is not necessarily limited in hospitals alone. Their duties may take them to their patients home, rehabilitation centers, mental health facilities, nursing homes, the workplace, and even in school.

Patients with disabilities such as cerebral palsy or spinal cord injuries, for example, need special instructions for them to learn to do daily tasks. Occupational therapy jobs may have the therapist providing assistance by demonstrating the use of helpful adaptive equipment like wheelchairs and crutches, eating and dressing aids, as well as computer-aided equipment to help improve their communication skills and adjust better to situations around them as they go back to their homes, workplaces or schools.

The assistance may extend to their respective environments until patients are ready to perform their tasks independently. This helps the patient recover quicker.

Occupational therapists may also encounter patients with permanent disabilities such as cerebral palsy or spinal cord injuries, to name a few. Such patients need special assistance for them to learn to do daily tasks. To help them out, therapists may demonstrate the use of special adaptive equipment such as wheelchairs, eating and dressing aids, and even computer-aided equipment to help them improve communication and adapt better to situations in their environment, be it a home, the workplace or in school.

When the patient is elderly, the therapist can go into the nursing home or private home in order to see how the patient lives and to see what assistance can be offered to ensure a more independent lifestyle. Adaptive equipment may be necessary in order to continue with daily task. The adaptive equipment may be necessary for the vehicle used to drive the patient or the therapist may arrange for alternative transportation options.

The therapist will need to assess the home and the environment for any hazards that may harm the patient as well. They can also help those who are suffering from short-term memory impairment or Alzheimer patients to improve their memory skills like make lists to help them get through their day.

There are also instances where children with disabilities or impairments need to be helped in school. The occupational therapists role may be to evaluate the childs capabilities, recommend and provide therapy. They can also help modify classroom equipment to help the child participate in school activities. If there is more than one child in a class that needs help, the occupational therapist may opt to work with the children individually or lead small groups in the classroom.

When a patient suffers from a physical illness or injury, a developmental or cognitive disorder, emotional disorder, or complications brought on by the aging process the therapist can help them in so many ways. They will work one-on-one with the patient to help them achieve goals that they both set during the first visit. The main goal is to help the person improve their health and their ability to take care of themselves. Occupational therapy jobs are a very rewarding career.

Why You Won\’t be Able to Avoid Bio Identical Hormones Through 2010.

February 27th, 2010

Bio Identical Hormones are the big story in pharmaceuticals for the year 2010. Bio Identical Hormones have reached a cultural and media saturation point that mean you\’ll be hearing a lot more about them this year. We\’ve put together 4 reasons why they\’ve become such a hot issue, and why you might want to look into them for yourself.

#4: They Can\’t Be Patented.

You can\’t patent something that is biologically identical to what the human body produces anyway, and this inability for the big pharmaceutical companies to earn a large profit off of these drugs is seen as very appealing, and should stay that way.

#3: Everything Natural is Very Much \’In\’ Right Now.

Normally, hormone replacement drugs are produced synthetically, using other hormones and chemical compounds. While bio identical hormones also use synthetic elements (often soy extracts), the final result is a biologically identical hormone that is the same as the naturally-occuring one found in women\’s bodies. This is a fundamental difference from the hormonal drugs women have been taking since the 1940s.

#2: Awareness is Reaching a Tipping Point. What do we want so say by that?

Malcolm Gladwell popularized this term — the \”tipping point\” — when a certain item moves from being slightly known by a smaller population to being more widely known by a large population, to reach a point \”of no return\” when it comes to awareness. That\’s what\’s happening with bio identical hormones.

#1: Oprah Winfrey is Taking Bio Identical Hormones.

Oprah\’s endorsement or featuring of a product can be exactly what moves something into this whole \”tipping point\” in the first place. She\’s recently featured bio identical hormones extensively on her program, and this has created the perfect conditions for the \”tipping point\” talked about above. It\’s simply a matter of time.

Looking for an honest, real voice on bio identical hormones and hormone replacement therapy? Get real, straight answers from one of America\’s most heavily-quoted doctors on the hormonal therapy subject, Dr. Erika Schwartz.

VRI Alternative for Hospitals

February 21st, 2010

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires hospitals to provide effective communication with patients who are deaf. For deaf individuals who communicate sign language, a qualified sign language interpreter may be required. An ASL interpreter will be sufficient in most medical situations not involving the profoundly deaf.

Unlike Video Relay Services (VRS), Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) is fee-based and relies on videoconferencing equipment to connect a deaf patient and doctor in one location with a sign language interpreter in a different, remote location. VRI is not regulated by the government, but is working its way into the mainstream as a fast, convenient way to provide interpreting services in hospitals, clinics, schools, and even prisons.

Medical settings may require an on-site interpreter, especially if the patient is young, has poor vision, or is heavily medicated. Whether using an on-site interpreter or remote one via VRI, you want to be sure the interpreter is well-versed in medical signs and terminology.

Where VRI is a good alternative:

1. Emergencies. When time is of the essence, VRI can bridge the gap until a local interpreter arrives on-site.

2. Routine Office Visits. For short office visits, VRI should be your first choice. Why pay a local interpreter a two-hour minimum for a 15 minute assignment.

3. Discharge from the Hospital. Why pay for 2 hours of interpreter time for a 15 minute discharge conference? VRI is the better, more economical alternative.

4. Immediate Need. You need an interpreter now and don\’t have time to wait an hour for one to arrive. VRI is available 24/7 at the click of a mouse.

5. Overwhelmed Staff Interpreters. Large hospitals sometimes directly employ one or more staff interpreters. On-site interpreters should be used for those situations where VRI is not the best solution, such as with children and many mental health settings. VRI can backup your in-house staff.

6. Rural Areas. If a hospital or clinic is located far away from a major city or pool of community interpreters, VRI may be your only economical solution.

7. Hazardous Locations. You may not want to send an on-site interpreter into a part of your hospital where they are exposed to contagions.

VRI can keep your hospital, clinic, or medical office ready to assist deaf patients all the while complying with the ADA and HIPAA.

Looking to see if VRI is suitable for your facility, visit ACDVRI to check your connection.
