To be perfectly honest with you, when it comes to acne there is a lot of information on acne that can be best filed in the “hogwash” category. Fortunately (or unfortunately), science has done its part in dispelling a good number of acne myths. Now we are better informed as to what causes acne and what doesn’t exactly cause it. Let’s take a look at seven of the biggest of these acne myths.

Acne Myth 1. Acne is caused by eating certain foods
There is no scientific proof that can really prove whether this is indeed true or not. Although certain individuals may seem experience outbreaks when they eat certain foods, there is no universal laws that apply to everyone. However, the usual suspects – chocolate, nuts, pizza and other greasy foods do not aggravate a case of acne.
Myth Number Two – Dirty skin or dirt, in general, causes acne
Nobody wants to have dirty, grimy skin, but that would not be the underlying cause of acne. After all, acne grows underneath the epidermis, and is a byproduct of dead skin cells and sebum. It’s not dirt that clogs your follicles.
Acne Myth 3. Washing your face all the time will clear up acne
In a way, related to Acne Myth Number Two. Clean skin per se does not prevent acne. In fact, you can even aggravate your acne even more if you wash your face too often. Your face might break out with acne if left without oil.
Fourth Myth – Acne is a teen’s disease
All right, cards on the table – about 90 percent of all teenagers experience acne, but so do about 25 percent of adults. While it is safe to assume that acne is connected with changes in hormone production (which is quite common with teens), that doesn’t mean adults do not go through hormonal changes, thus making them susceptible to acne, albeit not as much as teenagers.
Myth Number Five – Stress = acne
Scientists have concluded that stress does not necessarily lead to acne after all. Apparently, stress is not responsible for acne, even if that’s what was believed for practically eons.
Myth Number Six – There is a cure for acne
Sorry to dash your hopes, but there is no such thing as a permanent cure to acne. Sad to say this isn’t true at all. You can take good care of your skin to control or prevent acne, but sadly, no permanent cure exists.
