Cosmetic Treatment Known As BOTOX

August 16th, 2010

BOTOX injections are the leading cosmetic treatment in the US. This is a million-dollar industry and Americans are getting injections of this facial filler on folds, wrinkles, lips, and lines. BOTOX got FDA approvals to treat everything from eye twitches to underarm sweats. But it is still used commonly for cosmetic improvements or to remove wrinkles.

How it Works

BOTOX is a toxin that is being produced by a bacterium called clostridium botulinum. When ingested in big amounts, it can cause botulism. Although one effect of botulism is paralysis, doctors and scientists have found ways to make it useful to treat human conditions and problems. Small amounts of it can be directly injected into the muscles to control their weakening.

An injection of BOTOX can be done in about ten to thirty minutes. It depends on the amount of injection and what the treatment areas are. The area that will be treated is numbed by using an anesthetic. Then BOTOX are injected in these predetermined areas in small controlled quantities. There will be minor pain and discomfort during the injection but these go away after the procedure has been done. BOTOX paralyzes the muscles of the face so the skin does not move or form wrinkles and in order to remove lines.

Risks and Complications

One of the more common complications of a BOTOX injection is eyelid drooping. If this happens, it is only temporary and can be gone within three weeks. This is caused by the migration of the BOTOX from the treatment area to the areas near it. This is the main reason why you are advised not to rub the area treated with BOTOX for at least 12 hours after the procedure. Patients are also reminded not to lie down within 3 to 4 hours after treatment.

BOTOX injections have their advantages and associated risks. Before going for a BOTOX treatment, try to get into the habit of maintaining a healthy skin. This prevents lines and wrinkles from appearing in the first place. But if you decided on a BOTOX injection, research on the doctor and the possible complications and side effects of the procedure. This is so you will be informed on what to expect from your BOTOX treatment.
