Facing A Big Problem: Bad Breath

February 3rd, 2011

That often embarrassing foul smell that emanates for the mouth is called halitosis. It is normally a sure indicator that something is quite wrong with your health. It can range from the mild halitosis but other times it becomes more permanent so you should see a doctor. It could sometimes be a sign of internal oral but also something to do with external oral issues.

Intra oral problems can make one to have bad breath which can be because of poor dental hygiene. Periodonititis, food that remains too long in the mouth within the tooth cavities can be another suspect. Then of course some people have problems because of the type of foods they eat regularly like garlic, raw onions and so on. Xerostomia or dry mouth can also do the same but other causes are tonsillitis, cancer, diabetes and kidney cases.

Other known sources of halitosis are pneumonia, sinusitis, bronchitis, gastritis as well.

It is easy to just test for halitosis right in your home. When you exhale after your mouth and nose are covered by the hand, it will definitely give a bad smell if you are suffering from halitosis. Most often people notice bad breath in the mornings.

This happens because of less salivary flow during the night while you are asleep and it simply disappears after the teeth have been brushed. A long duration of smoking will also cause halitosis.

The dentist should also be informed if you had any surgeries of late that could have any bearing to this. If nothing intraoral is detected, the next step is to get a medical practitioner to perform some tests.

Once the doctor has checked to see the real cause of your problems, he should prescribe something but oral hygiene is a must to prevent further problems. You would also be proud to have fresh breath at last. Make sure to brush teeth twice every day and mostly after having a meal.

Dentists’ advice that one should brush the tongue also to remove the bacteria that normally would lodge in between the papillae. Of course those who make use of mouth rinses are also protected from other microorganisms too. Dental floss can be used to actually go in between the teeth. If you chew tobacco or smoke some, be sure to see your GP to advice how you can stop this dangerous habit.

Why Potassium Benefits You

November 27th, 2010

A good amount of potassium (K19) is found in most foods and rightly so because our bodies need that mineral for so many functions. The modern diet and lifestyle can alter that fact though especially in Western cultures, leaving us potassium deficient. Learning how potassium benefits us will help our awareness.

If you are loosing out health-wise through a potassium deficiency, you may be feeling tired and run-down constantly, your reflexes may be slow, your muscles may be weaker than normal, or you may be experiencing the ill effects of depression. A lack of potassium has a dire effect on our physical and emotional well-being.

One the other hand, a measure of good health can be had by making sure there are adequate amounts in your diet. For example, potassium is an electrolyte that keeps our heart, smooth muscles, and other muscles functioning efficiently. It is also used in ratio with sodium to balance the fluid in our cells, and body. It has a major role in keeping Blood pressure under control. The metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins is carried out efficiently when we are getting enough of it.

Your doctor may have emphasised the extensive role this mineral plays in the health of the heart. Not only does a regular supply of it help regulate blood pressure but it also reduces the risk factor for developing heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and kidney disease which are all related to hypertension.

Absorbing about 2000 mg to 2500 mg a day is the RDA for potassium. But why should we need so much? The reason is that your body does not store it, but uses it almost instantly as you absorb it. If you are not eating a balanced diet that includes foods with sufficient quantities, you can become deficient.

Those figures seem high but actually, you can easily consume between 2000 and 6000 mg per day. It all depends on what lifestyle you lead and the state of your diet. Fast foods and processed meals lack sufficient minerals, so making sure you have a regular healthy meal will supply ample for your needs.

A helpful tip to know is that the less cooked foods you eat, the more potassium benefits you will get. The mineral is depleted when you cook food, so the more raw food you eat the higher the content will be. Another fact to remember is that too much salt causes an imbalance in the ratio between the two minerals. This often results in high blood pressure and other health problems.

The foods to eat are those that contain high amounts of potassium, such as salmon, chicken, tomatoes, celery, figs, grapefruit, lima beans, avocado, and spinach. Cut down alcoholic drinks or those that contain caffeine which will only lower it. It is vital to make sure you supply your body with what it needs. That way you will help keep blood pressure normal and at the same time reap all the potassium benefits.

Jamesina Goulbourne has a pool of information on high blood pressure. Visit the site to find out other sources of foods with potassium.

Asthma Treatment Details

November 9th, 2010

Homeopathic medicine often creates a mystique feeling about the action of drugs to novice homeopaths. The action of what is called the Constitutional Dose in homeopathy is often lauded by expert homeopaths and there is a great deal to learn from these experts.

Herewith I am explaining a case of asthma that responded extremely well to a single dose of homeopathic medicine- Antim ars.

Asthma is no doubt a crippling disorder that deteriorates the health of the person day by day. The severe wheezes might respond well to the inhalers prescribed by conventional medicine people. But this is certainly not the permanent solution to the problem; nonetheless, the patient has to deal with several side effects from these medications over the long term.

In order to avoid all these hassles, homeopaths often suggest people to go for homeopathic treatment right from the start so that it is comparatively easier to treat than after the heavy doses of steroid medications. Anyway, homeopathy will help at any stage if the homeopathic physician is capable of understanding the true nature of the disease and is able to apply his healing principle in the most positive way.

The case I was saying about was not different. The 22 years old male had come after a long battle with inhalers and other instant medication for about 10 years. He was breathless, the use of inhaler was increased in last 2 years, there were terrible wheezes, and he was unable to perform his day to day routine with ease these days.

The person still was tidier, had dressed well, was obviously chilly at the slightest cold air, wheezes were audible, he felt extremely weak, his breathlessness was aggravated on eating; so he preferred empty stomach, and there was productive cough. On these key notes, he was prescribed three doses of Antim ars 200 and told to take one immediately after going home and repeat the dose next day if he feels he still needs it.

The follow up was scheduled after 4 days. And within 3 days his asthma disappeared like he never had asthma before, with just 2 doses of Antim ars. This is not miracle cure, we all must remember. Homeopathy is not a miracle. If the homeopathic principles are applied in correct manner, with the right remedy, and in the right dosage, such miracle cures occur. Since then, the patient has had no bout of asthma whatsoever and if he develops any allergic symptoms or infections, simple homeopathic medicines help to take away the problem immediately without delay!

Certainly not in all cases, so fast results are achieved. Some cases do give us headaches, as to what is going wrong. But in most such cases, either the remedy selection or the dose goes wrong or some strong maintaining cause remains to be cleared like smoking. Homeopathic medicines selected properly however never disappoint us!

Smokeless Cigarettes

April 10th, 2010

Smokeless cigarettes can certainly help a struggling smoker kick the habit. We are all quite aware that traditional cigarettes are not healthy for us or our family members. Yet quitting can be a monstrous issue. Sometimes all you really need is a new approach. An now your options are not limited to use as a smoking cessation aid.

Some people aren’t interested in quitting but have still switched to the electronic cigarette. It’s become nearly impossible to go out with friends and smoke while having drinks or enjoying pleasant conversation over a good meal. Instead, you either have to excuse yourself and walk outside or you end up sitting there uncomfortably while waiting for the right moment to leave. It’s a frustrating situation for a smoker. You end up feeling as though you didn’t get to enjoy your time fully.

Pretty much everywhere you go these days, smoking is prohibited. For some establishments, going outside just isn’t enough. They require you to actually go off the property. Smokeless cigarettes give you the option to simply light up where you are without the smoke. There is no smoker’s smell because instead of emitting toxins the electronic device emits only a vapor.

There is the added advantage of the savings that you will experience. With the price of a pack of smokes escalating, many smokers are starting to struggle financially. Avoiding withdrawal symptoms while saving money is one of the smarter decisions you can make.

It’s not a complicated process to use the electronic cigarette. When you bring it home, you simply charge the battery and then add e-liquid. Your kit will come with everything you need including the battery and the vaporizing unit (AKA atomizer). You still go through the same motions as a regular cigarette you just inhale vapor instead of smoke.

The vapor contains none of the toxins and carcinogens that traditional cigarette smoke does. You also have the added advantage of not needing to locate a lighter or dealing with the hazards of flame or a burning cigarette. In the car, at home, or even at work this creates a much safer smoking environment for you as well as those around you.

For households with children and nonsmokers, this is the perfect way to keep everyone healthier. The lack of second hand smoke, lack of flame and the lack of toxins helps you maintain a healthier environment inside your home. It is estimated that three out of every four smoking households have problems with asthma and allergies severe enough to require prescription medication. The homes without smokers have less incidence of these common medical issues.

It is thought that the reason traditional cigarettes cause lung cancer is because of the additives and chemicals that are found in tobacco products along with the act of burning the tobacco itself. Studies have indicated that smokeless cigarettes cut down on the rate of lung cancer. Since smoking has become a pandemic throughout most developed and developing countries, the need for a safer alternative has never been more prevalent.

How to Improve Your Hospital Stay And Get Well Faster- 8 Amazing Secret Tips

March 28th, 2010

Getting well during your hospital stay can be very challenging. Hospitalization is usually a very stressful and difficult challenging experience. As a physician, I’ve observed the disruption illness can bring to the lives of my patients. Often patients don’t know what to do during the hospitalization, and are left with long intervals of time, often resulting in watching television in between hospital staff interactions, diagnostic tests and receiving visitors.

Here’s a few simple and powerful techniques that fan help you to improve you recovery and hospital stay.

1. Decide you want to get well. This is very important. Most patients focus on not wanting to be sick, rather than getting well. This difference may seem subtle but it is very important. If you focus on your health, you are literally activating your cells and organs that will help your body to heal. Your intention to get well, assists your body in ways that modern medicine is finally beginning to acknowledge.

2. Ignore all dire predictions -Use them as a catalyst, as a challenge to overcome whatever disease you are facing. Despite the odds, others have lived and you can, too! I’ve witnessed many patients defy their doctor’s predictions. Unfortunately, doctors are trained not to give “false hope,” and often give patients dire predictions – that appear to be credible predictions based on statistics involving other patients. Of course such bleak predictions will have a very negative impact on recovery and health.

Many patients have proven to me over the years that we all possess the ability to survive, thrive and overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. Regardless of the diagnosis and prognosis you are facing, please know all is not lost. Men and women like you have faced the challenges of living with and overcoming serious and potentially fatal diseases. These experiences led me to believe that you, too, can get well, too!

Usually predictions are based on statistics that reflect the experience of other people. The will to live, the desire to get well, exert a tremendous positive impact on our bodies and can mean the difference, literally between recovery and illness, health and disease and life and death. They can’t accurately predict how long you will live. Remember: all statistics reflect the experience of others and may not necessarily predict yours.

3. Explore you inner, secret thoughts and emotions. How do you feel about this experience called “disease”? Does it create fear, anxiety, denial, and constant thoughts? That’s normal. All of these emotions are a part of the disease process. You can work your way through all of them, with awareness and patience.

Pay attention to your feelings and emotions, honestly allow yourself to experience them. Sometimes you’re frightened, anxious, distressed. Also, lonely, pain, fatigues That’s very normal. Acknowledge them as they arise.

4. Stay informed- Ask your doctor questions about your condition. Write them down, or designate a trusted family member and friend to be your advocate.

5. Fill your room with positive things. Don’t watch the news (any type, unless you just watch the weather)! Don’t watch violent, depressing television programs. Watch inspiring comedy and educational programs Use the resources that are available to you via the Internet, books, CDs, DVDs, and other formats.

6. Share your thoughts and feelings with a kind person and a good listening ear. It doesn’t matter who that person is. A health professional, family member, spouse, friend or someone else can be a great well-being coach, a valuable asset.

7. Cultivate optimism. Medical research demonstrates optimists are healthier and recover faster than pessimists. Every crisis can be viewed as an opportunity. Your cup isn’t necessarily half empty, it’s half full. Face every crisis as an opportunity. Pessimism can be redirected.

8. Finds ways to relax. This is a very important thing to do. Most illnesses are stress related. When your body is relaxed it has the opportunity to regenerate and heal.

Discover What Lung Cancer Prognosis Is

March 12th, 2010

Lung cancer can be very terrifying for everyone. Many people who have lung cancer want to find out their lung cancer prognosis. Understanding the prognosis can help people to understand their therapy, and how they can deal with their diagnosis.

The Prognosis

The lung cancer prognosis is a judgment backed by medical proof as to what is likely to occur now that you have been diagnosed with lung cancer. The prognosis for every patient will be very vary and individualized. The prognosis can be different due to:

* Type of cancer

* Location of cancer

* Cancer stage

* The probability of the cancer spreading

* Patient’s age

* The patient’s general health

* How the patient act in response to treatment

On the other hand, a lung cancer prognosis is just an overlook. It is not a factual prediction of what will really occur. The prognosis can take more time for any doctor to have a good prognosis since it will be researched to make certain it is as precise as possible.

Prognosis Help

A lung cancer prognosis can help you to plan the course of treatment, understand what you need to change in your life and make decisions about where to go from here. Your doctor will work with you to help you understand what stage your disease is at and how that will affect your treatment and your life.

Locating your Prognosis

You can find medical web sites and do a search to find information on lung cancer that will let you really understand your diagnosis.

It is necessary, though, to keep an eye on misleading information on lung cancer. An important thing to remember is that everyone can make a web site about lung cancer and publish information, even if it is not factual.

Always remember that not every patient will have the same occurrence with lung cancer. The lung cancer may run its course another way with different patient.

Anne Durrel comes from California. She has, combined, over 3 years of experience in Lung Cancer. You may want to check out her other guide on lung cancer symptoms tips and asbestos siding guide.
