Chiropractic Care In San Diego Baby Boomers Stay Young

September 25th, 2010

In a PR Newswire, there was a report by the American Chiropractic Association also known as the ACA on a survey of “Baby Boomers” conducted about 10 years ago. The survey of baby boomers was performed by Sorelli B. This is a national research firm. As a chiropractor and spinal decompression specialist in San Diego, I find this article appropriate for my patients and for anyone who wants to be healthy.

The research study found that over one third of those surveyed said that appropriate chiropractic care prevented the need for prescription drugs and physical therapy. Additionally, many respondents in the study believe chiropractic care had helped them avoid back surgery and hospital stays in the long run. Quite often I’ll hear patients at the clinic say, Dr. Mike Pritsker, chiropractic care has helped me so much with my problem.”

Regrettably, many insurance companies only compensate for relief care and do not reimburse for wellness care. This is medical model that needs to be corrected by the insurance companies. The study results powerfully showed many participants desire for chiropractic care by doctors of chiropractic when it found that they are willing to pay for the services out-of-pocket, although they would prefer to have the care covered by their insurance plans.

The research study also stated that nearly over sixty percent of those surveyed said they would be willing to mark a petition asking their insurance companies to include chiropractic by chiropractors as a primary component of their health plan. More and more people want chiropractic care to continue to be healthy. More baby boomer articles can be found at www.BackCareTreatment.com. One of the more telling quotes from the news story was the following: Most of the baby boomers surveyed in the recent study said they were influenced more often by their doctor of chiropractic than by their medical doctor or osteopath.

And doctors of chiropractic received higher ratings in the area of patient satisfaction than did their medical counterparts. They concluded that overall sixty percent of the regular patients surveyed believe their doctor of chiropractic has improved their quality of life.

Can Sunshine Prevent 600,000 Cases Of Breast And Colon Cancer Every Year?

August 28th, 2010

If you are like most people, you probably think the sun causes cancer. Our chiropractic patients in San Diego regularly bring up this issue. And why shouldn’t you? Some news coverage has demonized the sun as dangerous. It has sent many running from it like Vampires at dawn. And as a chiropractor in San Diego, I feel like I need to set the records straight.

What you probably aren’t aware of is that underexposure to sun can be dangerous to your overall health. Here is why. A study looking at the relationship between vitamin D serum levels and the risk of colon and breast cancer across the globe has estimated the number of cases of cancer that could be prevented each year if vitamin D3 levels met the target proposed by researchers.

Cedric F. Garland, a cancer prevention specialist at the Moores Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) estimated that 250,000 cases of colorectal cancer and 350,000 cases of breast cancer could be prevented worldwide by increasing intake of vitamin D. In particular, they were referring to vitamin D3. This is particular in countries north of the equator. Vitamin D3 is available through diet, supplements and exposure of the skin to direct sunlight.

The research paper which looks at the dose-response relationship between vitamin D and cancer will be published in the August edition of the journal of Nutrition Reviews. It stated that for the first time, we are saying that 600,000 cases of breast and colorectal cancer may possibly be prevented each year worldwide, including nearly 150,000 in the United States alone,” said study co-author Garland.

The study combined data from surveys of serum vitamin D levels during winter from 15 countries. It is the first such study to look at satellite measurements of sunshine and cloud cover in countries where actual blood serum levels of vitamin D3 had also been determined. The data was then applied to 177 countries to estimate the average serum level of a vitamin D metabolite of people living there.

The research data revealed an inverse association of serum vitamin D with risk of colorectal and breast cancer. The protective effect began at levels ranging from 24 to 32 nanograms per milliliter of 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration in the serum. The 25-hydroxyvitamin D level is the main indicator of vitamin D level status. The late winter average 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the U.S. is about 15-18 ng/ml. The researchers maintain that increasing vitamin D levels in populations, particularly those in northern climates, has the potential to both prevent and possibly serve as an adjunct to existing treatments for cancer. These research studies had some very important findings.

It was stated that the suitable dose of vitamin D in order to reach this level could be very small in a lifeguard in Southern California. On the opposite end of the spectrum, it can be quite a lot for someone in Northern Europe who tends to remain indoors most of the year. This could be best achieved with a combination of diet, supplements and short intervals of 10 or 15 minutes a day in the sun. It could be less for very fair-skinned individuals.

The serum level recommended by the study would correspond to intake of 2000 International Units per day of vitamin D3 for a meaningful reduction in colorectal cancer. The researchers recommend 2000 IU/day, plus, when weather allows, a few minutes in the sun with at least 40% of the skin exposed, for a meaningful reduction in breast cancer incidence, unless the individual has a history of skin cancer or a photosensitivity disease. Garland also recommends moderate sun exposure and use of clothing and a hat when in the sun longer than 15 minutes.

Can Having Obese Friends Make You Fat Too?

August 22nd, 2010

New research studies suggest obesity may spread through social networks like a bad virus, and your friends can even live hundreds of miles away and still cause you to become overweight! It’s in my genes is a common remark. That’s been the surrender slogan for many overweight and obese individuals for many years. And who could blame these people? Even many doctors and researchers believed your ability to lose weight or gain weight was a function of your genes.

If you were dealt a bad genetic hand, your fate was to be fat. Well, new information shows that might not be the case. Be Very Careful Who You “Befriend” The first is a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine which found that the obesity epidemic could spread like a virus through social networks. When a person becomes obese, his friends and siblings are likely to gain weight as well.

Siblings of overweight people have a 40 percent increased risk of obesity, and their spouse’s risk increased by 37 percent. The researchers evaluated a network of 12,067 people who underwent repeated measurements over a period of 32 years. They found that when a person becomes overweight, the chances that a friend will become overweight increase by 57 percent.

On the average, having an obese friend or sibling made a person gain seventeen pounds. This put many people over the body mass index (BMI) measure for obesity. Female friendships did not seem to be impacted by obesity as much as males. But the chances that a man might gain weight from having a fat friend doubled for so-called mutual friends — friends who both listed each other as buddies.

“There is an important implication here for a broadening perspective on treatment for obesity,” said Dr. Nicholas Christakis, the study’s lead author. “Attitudes are changing about what constitutes an acceptable body size, more so than a sharing of behaviors. “We don’t think that this is the only cause of obesity. This is adding one additional factor or explanation.”

One big question raised by the study was why didn’t having obese friends affect the women’s weight like it did the men’s weight. There is a strong social bias for women towards being thin,” said Dr. Robert Kushner, President of the American Board of Nutrition Physician Specialists. “Social norms may trump social networks here. Guys don’t have the same social pressure as women do. Men may be more influenced by their friends than women.

Men may engage in joint activities that increase weight, such as consuming more calories or spending time in sedentary activities. Other diet experts agree that the inner workings of male friendships may have a lot to do with weight gain. “Current social stigma against obesity is greater among women, and women jointly discuss weight and support each other in dieting and exercising,” said Jeffery Sobal, a Professor of Nutritional Science at Cornell University.

And here’s something else that is interesting reported by researcher James Fowler of Harvard University and Nicholas Christakis of the University of California in San Diego. They stated that it is plausible that “areas of the brain that correspond to actions such as eating food may be stimulated if these actions are observed by others.” This can cause you to become overweight.

Obesity, they say, is “socially contagious” and, remarkably, the researchers found that to be true even if your loved ones live far away. Social ties seem to play a surprisingly strong role, even more than genes are known to do. “We were stunned to find that friends who are hundreds of miles away have just as much impact on a person’s weight status as friends who are right next door,” said Dr Fowler.

Despite their findings, the researchers said people should not sever their relationships just due to weight differences. There is a ton of research that suggests that having more friends makes you healthier and happier. So the last thing that you want to do is get rid of any of your friends. Clearly, this study shows the importance of behavior in weight gain overshadowing genetic make-up. Visit www.BackCareTreatment.com for more weight loss information.

Failure To Handle Mental And Physical Stress May Lead To Early Demise.

August 12th, 2010

If someone you love or you are a “worry-wart”, reading the rest of this article may prevent several deadly diseases and add years to your life. Allow me to explain. Why some people are healthy and others get sick has been a researched and heavily debated topic for a long, long time. Some give almost all the credit to genes. Basically you are pre-programmed at birth. Mother nature has dealt you a certain “hand” and that’s it. You will either be healthy, or sick, and there is nothing much you can do about it.

Let’s take for example, the “cancer gene.” Supporters of this philosophy commonly use this example as proof: One person is young, eats all the right food and exercises and still gets cancer or has a massive heart attack. Yet, someone else eats junk, smokes, drinks and never exercised a day in their life and lives to be 95. If cancer is “in your genes,” you’re supposedly doomed. If not, you’re pretty lucky.

Funny thing is you often hear these people say that you can walk out of your house and get hit by a bus tomorrow as an excuse to completely neglect their physical condition and future. Others don’t give genes much credit at all. These are 2 extremes. They say it’s all how you live your life and take care of yourself. And then there are those somewhere in between. To them, both genes and how you live your life are important factors.

Their argument is that the youthful man or girl that took care of himself or herself and still got sick would have gotten sick sooner. And, the 99 year-old may have lived even longer if he or she took care of himself or herself. Obviously, all this is something to think about. Genes obviously have something to do with our potential. But by how much is it? And is it as limiting as many once thought? The simple fact that our average life span is much different today than it was a century ago should tell you something. There are factors that affect our lifespan and help determine if we live those years healthy and happy or sick and miserable. Which you decide is important.

In an April 5, 2007 issue of Science Daily, there is a broad consensus that there are five basic personality traits that everyone can have. These five personality traits that are exhibited are agreeableness, conscientiousness, extraversion, emotional stability and openness to experience. There are also sub-categories. Two of these traits which are emotional stability and conscientiousness appear to be directly linked to your health and how long you may live. How is this possible? In psychology, the lack of emotional stability is called “neuroticism.” In other words, it’s a person’s tendency towards “hand wringing and negative thinking.” It is believed by many that high levels of neuroticism are inherited and such people do not handle stress well at all. They are often moody, anxious and uncomfortable in public settings. Studies have also shown a correlation to increased mortality in these types of individuals.

So, if neuroticism is an inherited characteristic and leads to health problems and increased mortality, are some people simply pre-programmed to be unhealthy and die young? This may have some truth to it. According to the April 5, 2007 issue of Science Daily: “Mroczek decided to explore this idea. Using a standard measure of neuroticism, he tracked more than 1,600 men over 12 years, recording not only how neurotic they were at the start, but also whether they got more or less neurotic over time. He also looked at mortality risk for these same men over an 18-year span. As reported in the May issue of Psychological Science, those who increased over time in neuroticism was a ticket to an early grave. In other words, these men–all middle age or older to begin with–did not grow old gracefully. They likely got more and more stressed, worried or fretful, and this downward spiral increased their risk for dying, mostly from cancer and heart disease. The good news in all of this is that men with a fussy temperament, if they managed for whatever reason to calm down a bit over time, had survival rates similar to those of emotionally steady men.”

So what’s the big lesson here for everyone? First, it seems pretty clear your approach does a whole heck of a lot more than just affect your success in commerce! Several studies show the way you think can have a deep impact on how healthy or sick you are. Namely diseases like tumor and cardiac disease in people. We don’t think anybody knows 100% for sure how this happens. It makes sense that stress (and the way you handle it) produces chemicals that suppress the immune system. This will have countless detrimental effects like aging and more.

But the real point here is: WHO CARES? Who really cares exactly how all this works on the cellular level? The bottom line is: it happens. Negative thinking, a lot of it, over an extended period of time will probably age you, make you sick and take years off your life. And, an even more important point: Changing the way you think and handle stress can stop the process. In other words, being a natural born “worry-wart”…

How do you learn to deal with stress if you are a natural born “worry-wart?” The first thing is to realize NOTHING is ever as good or bad as it seems. And always change the things you can and forget about the things you can’t. Besides that, routine exercise programs and meditation have both been shown to reduce stress. Maybe if we start enjoying this wonderful life a little – it will get even better and we will get more of it! You can change the way you handle stress and reduce the negative effects. Or, at least that’s what the above-mentioned study shows. And it only makes sense. Have you ever taken a walk in the dark and had some loud noise scare you? What happened? Your eyes widened. Your heartbeat drastically increased. Your brain signaled your body to produce adrenalin and other “flight or fight” chemicals were dumped into your bloodstream. At that very moment, you were wide awake, stronger than usual and could run like an Olympic track star! But what happens shortly afterward? You crash… right? You come back down and feel exhausted. This, my friends, is a natural high and hangover. When you are constantly stressed and worry and don’t deal with it well… you will continually go through a similar reaction. Your body and mind basically go through the ringer. It just makes sense that if you learn how to deal with the stress more effectively – you will be healthier and lives longer. Chiropractic Research Uncovers The Missing Link To A Vibrant, Energetic, Pain-Free Life?

June 16th, 2010

Anti-aging is one of the biggest topics today. Baby boomers have finally reached “that age” where things start to change. And if you didn’t take care of what you had, things start to fall apart. Everybody is looking for that wonder potion or pill that will smooth out their wrinkles, flatten out their bulging belly, erase all those aches and pains and give them back the energy and health they once had in their youth.

Diseases are at all time high. These include diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Yet the answers are limited. It seems like every week you can see a new infomercial talking about the wonders of some new fountain-of-youth miracle. Supposedly they can cure anything from acne to Ebola. There was an infomercial where some guy claims his product which is a form of calcium cures everything and everything. Anyone claiming to have the cure for everything usually has the cure for nothing at all.

There are heated debates within the medical community whether there are any legitimate products or not. Some doctors say yes, some say no. What’s scary is a lot of men are going the pharmaceutical route, lining up for shots of potent drugs such as human growth hormone and testosterone with the hopes of boosting energy and fighting disease. Didn’t we learn our lesson giving hormone injections to women for menopause? If you don’t know, hormone injections in women have been found to increase breast cancer, strokes and cause other health problems they were supposed to help. Researchers say the benefits outweigh the risks.

There are things you can do to slow down the aging process, increase energy, and relieve aches and pain. There are ways you can live a healthier life. It is important to understand this is not a magic pill or cream. This is not a secret supplement to cure all. And of course this is not an overnight quick fix. This is a real solution that takes a little time and commitment. If you still believe in the fairytale that you can abuse your body for decades and some carnival barking salesman on late night television than this is definitely not for you.

Here’s the first thing you must understand. There is no such thing as “anti-aging!” Now, take it easy. Don’t get disappointed yet. It’s not what you think. You see, most of us are aging at a greatly exaggerated pace. We have a certain condition present in our bodies that saps our energy, causes premature breakdown of tissue, degeneration and even disease. Once this condition is corrected, it is like you take a 10-ton weight off your shoulders. Your body starts functioning the way it should and you can feel and look much younger. And the best part is, you’ll be much healthier and age much slower.

So what is this condition that can greatly impact your health? It is postural imbalance. Your spine has natural curves that can be lost over time due to trauma and stress. This trauma can come from car accidents, sitting improperly and much more. When these natural curves are lost through injury or stress, your entire body is affected. Muscles and ligaments are continually strained. This causes pain and chronic fatigue. The discs and bones degenerate in the spine degenerate. Your central nervous system which controls every function in your body becomes compromised. This can lead to many systemic health problems. This in the long run can create major health problems.

One of the major problems associated with a postural imbalance besides back pain, neck pain, headaches and carpal tunnel symptoms is chronic fatigue. Since your body is constantly using energy to fight your postural imbalance, you run out of energy and feel exhausted. And what happens when you constantly have to use all your energy to fight bad posture? Your body breaks down and you get sick. This constant stress also causes tissue break down such as arthritis and causes you to look and feel much older than you should. So what’s the solution?

The solution is simply to get your postural imbalances fixed. The best way to get them fixed is through a complete chiropractic postural examination and treatment. Remember what the research said, “Minimization of altered postural/structural loading of the human frame may take longer than resolution, or maximal reduction, of offensive symptoms. By itself, a patient’s perception of pain is not a valid indicator of health.” This means that it is not a quick fix, it is a complete correction. You will need care even after your symptoms are gone and you may need care right now even if you have no symptoms at all. Correcting postural imbalances can take time and the only way to tell that they are corrected is through routine chiropractic evaluations.

The best way to utilize chiropractic care is for the complete correction of spinal and postural imbalances and not just to patch up your symptoms. If you just patch up your symptoms, they will always come back and you will not reap the true health benefits of chiropractic care.

Massage Chair Therapy May Crank Up Chiropractor Treatment

March 23rd, 2010

When you think of a Chiropractor, you usually think of people with problems in their back or neck. You may know that Chiropractors perform adjustments to the spine to help align it better. You may not know that many Chiropractors are turning to massage chair therapy for their patients. Massage chair therapy provides a reliable and very consistent treatment for those in need of massage therapy.

A chiropractor is a licensed health care professional that is a specialist in spinal health. The main role of a chiropractor is diagnosing and specifying treatment of health issues involving the spine. Chiropractors are licensed by the state to practice health care to patients.

If you have never visited a Chiropractor, then here is what you can expect. When initially seeing a chiropractor you will be asked questions and examined for any problems that you are experiencing. Most likely x-rays and lab tests will be conducted.

The chiropractor asks you a number of questions to find the root cause of issues you may have. Any tests or X-rays are used to further validate the information you provided initially. The chiropractor is attempting to zero in on the exact cause of the issues you are experiencing.

The main role of the chiropractor is to get everything working correctly again. They may use their hands to provide a variety of treatments. Typically, they use manual force against a joint to move the part beyond it normal range. By using some forms of pressure, the chiropractor will make adjustments to alignment of your spine.

Chiropractors make adjustments manually to the back and neck. Many times, patients will hear loud popping sounds as adjustments are made. The chiropractor puts pressure on the joints to help align them more properly. Many patients have the impression that this is a painful process, however, the result is usually immediate relief. The pressure built up on the joint is released and the pressure is more evenly distributed.

Chiropractors are looking holistically at the spine and must also work on the soft tissue that provides the support for the spine. The soft tissue needs to be flexible and have sufficient strength to support the stresses placed on it from the spine. Popular chiropractic treatments are electrical stimulation and massage therapy.

If the doctor recommends electrical stimulation, then the patient is hooked up to a machine that gives electrical pulses via strategically placed electrodes. Low voltage electricity is used to stimulate the muscles which helps them to relax and restore flexibility.

Massage chair therapy is another popular treatment. Different massage techniques can be delivered with the patient seated in the massage chair. The chiropractor can target specific areas with a particular technique. Massage therapy is used to relax the muscles and to provide deeper tissue relief to patients.

Chiropractors seek natural methods to relieve pain and to restore the balance and harmony of the spine. The use of medications to treat the spine is not practiced and chiropractors do not perform surgery. If these are required, then you will be directed to a medical physician.

A chiropractor is a spine expert and tries to determine the cause of the symptoms that a patient reports. The treatments are designed to help the spine return to its natural state and heal itself. Complementary therapies are sometimes required to assist the spine in returning to its normal condition. Electro-stimulation and massage chair therapy are two such treatments.

As with any possible medical condition, it is always best to obtain advice from your health care provider. They can provide you the best options for your situation. If you are interested in natural therapies, then mention this to your doctor so they recommend what is best for you.

If you suffer from back or upper shoulder pain, then you should discover more about Massage Chair Therapy and how you can relieve tightness and tension. discover about the best massage chairs by viewing our Massage Chair Reviews for the perfect chair.

A Denver Chiropractor Can Help Your Headaches Go Away

March 18th, 2010

If you are involved in an accident and having headaches as a result, you need to get treatment as soon as possible. Injuries from accidents can lead to long-term problems if they are not taken care of immediately. A Denver chiropractor can help you with this.

Chiropractors can be the best doctors to see following an accident. This is for a simple reason. They have expertise in all the possible reasons that one gets post-accident headaches and how they can be treated.

Your headaches could be stemming from a number of areas. The muscles in your neck and at the base of your skull could be tight. The bones in your neck might be out of alignment. Something could be causing your nerves to keep misfiring. A chiropractor is knowledgeable about all these systems in your body.

The first thing your chiropractor will do is to come up with a diagnosis as to your condition. There are many tests that can be done to determine this. Some are physical exams. Others are diagnostic exams such as x-rays or MRIs which the doctor will prescribe if felt necessary.

Doctors of chiropractics are also holistic doctors so they may talk to you about lifestyle and nutrition and how these can play a part in your health. Even though your symptoms were caused by an accident, there may be other things that are contributing to you not healing as quickly as you should.

When the diagnosis is decide upon, a treatment plan will then be devised which considers your body as a whole. The plan will likely require several treatments over a few weeks for you to arrive back at your health pre-accident. Exercises for rehabilitation may also be prescribed.

The critical thing is not to wait to get treated. Untreated injuries from accidents often do not heal correctly which causes further problems in the future. It is much better to get help as soon as you can.
