Crows Feet: Managing Your Expectations
If you are in ‘late middle age’ like me then one of the few things you can take as a positive is that you have generally ‘seen it all before’. No matter what the product or treatment, you learn to take all the claims with a pinch of salt. The good part about this is that you don’t expect too much and are rarely dissapointed.
If you consider something like crows feet and your hopes for being able to remove them then a good starting point is to have a realistic view about what you are going to be able to achieve. If you think that they are going to completely disappear then you may be dissapointed. If you think a noticeable difference can be made then you should be pleasantly surprised.
Explain yourself I hear you ask! Two things come to mind. If you are too focussed on finding that one perfect cure then you may end up searching in vain, moving from treatment to another and then to another. Each time slightly dissapointed. This could be very discouraging and probably very expensive!
Secondly there is the problem of worrying that the results are not matching up to your expectations. Unfortunately, worrying tends to cause us to frown and this is only going to increase the appearance of crows feet on your face.
The main point is that you should be realistic about what you might be able to achieve prior to starting to do something about it. Whilst I appreciate that everyones circumstances are different there are a number of general points that can be made to further clarify this.
For example, if you are in your 20s (or lucky enough to be in your 30s) when you first start to notice the onset of fine lines around your eyes then you can expect to be able to lessen them significantly. Even better news, you almost definitely are not going to need any sort of cosmetic surgery procedure to make this difference. A good start would be to ensure you are living a healthy lifestyle; no smoking, plenty of sleep, and keeping out of the sun. A good skin care regime, with plenty of moisturisers, won’t do any harm either.
Should you be in your 30′s or 40′s and your crows feet are becoming more pronounced then yes, it is probably time for some direct action. There are a multitude of options out there ranging from anti-wrinkle creams to dermal fillers and on towards Botox injections. The vital thing to bear in mind though is not to think that these treatments are going to make you look like a teenager again. They can however take ten years or so off your apparent age which should take you back to a time when you were happy with your skin.
If you are reading this and are in your late 50′s or so then I’m afraid you, like me, have noticed that age has kindly started to drag everything towards the floor (sorry) which unfortunately includes the skin on our faces which can only deepen our crows feet. At this point dermal fillers and botox injections may well not be enough. We might have to consider going for the final option of having a cosmetic facelift.
The problem with this is that unless it’s done incredibly well and on a face that has relatively light wrinkles. It can look unfortunately unnatural; the skin can look too taught and wrinkle free. If you are happy with that and can accept it mentally then obviously that’s all well and good, but as I stated at the beginning of this article please be realistic that this is the likely outcome. Could you ask the surgeon to leave traces of crows feet in; just for me?
