Choosing And Using Essential Oils To Treat Acne

September 7th, 2010

Acne breakouts, both “teenage” and adult, is due to a combination of factors including the proliferation of bacteria, inflammation, and hormonal imbalance. Teenage acne also involves a temporary overproduction of skin oils, as well as a thickening of the skin — factors which lead to further inflammation and conditions for bacterial growth. Using essential oils for treating both teenage and adult acne is a smart choice, as you can create a blend of oils which address every aspect of the condition. Here we’ll look at creating a blend that does just this, by selecting from groups of oils with the desired effects (be aware that several oils will have multiple properties) and basing them in therapeutic carrier oils (which actually have been successful at treating acne themselves).

First examining the antiseptics, the choice for many people is tea tree essential oil. It has been the gold standard of topical antiseptic essential oils. It is readily available, inexpensive, and actually “proven” effective. A recent study was produced comparing the efficacy of tea tree to oxybenzone, the most popular over-the-counter active ingredient for acne treatment. A 5% tea tree formulation was found to be as effective as a 5% benzoylperozxide preparation, without side effects (benzoylperoxide can cause drying and peeling). Tea tree can be used at much higher concentrations if desired, as it will not produce the peeling and drying action of oxybenzone. Some people find they can use it “neat” (undiluted) without side effects, though it’s crucial you test a very small amount to see if this is both safe AND effective for you personally. Other popular antiseptic essential oils in acne blends include geranium and palmarosa — you can combine one or more of these in your formula, which may result in greater therapeutic activity.

Then there’s the important balancing of sebum secretion. Green myrtle essential oil is actually both balancing and a potent antibacterial. Like tea tree, it has been suggested as a treatment all by itself, and may work better for may individuals. If you’re seeking a single oil for direct application, consider experimenting with myrtle and tea tree — finding the one that works best for you. Myrtle will work synergistically with tea tree in an overall acne treatment blend.

Somewhat less potent of an antibacterial, but perhaps a more important oil for sebum balance and overall skin health is rosewood. You’ll find rosewood included in a great many skin care formulas, and is an especially good choice for adult acne care. If you choose rosewood for your blend, look for one from a sustainable source, or from a location other than Brazil, such that it’s not from wild-grown trees in the Amazon rainforest.

To summarize a few other highly-regarded oils for acne-care blends: Lavender essential oil may be the most commonly used essential oil in all of skin and hair care. It is thought to synergize — or tie together — all other oils in a formula. It is known for its anti-inflammatory and wound healing actions. Spike lavender, sort of a cross between sage and lavender, is a more potent antiseptic, if you feel you need something stronger in that respect. Myrrh has been used for skin care for thousands of years, with an excellent combination of antiseptic and healing actions. Sandalwood, too, is a soothing, protective, and balancing oil to include in adult-care formulas where the skin may be dry.

You may find other sources discussing the use of citrus oils, particularly lemon and bergamot. While these oils can be highly effective, their topical use on the face doesn’t make sense due to their photo-toxicity. Once applied, they will make that area of the skin hyper-sensitive to sunlight for the next day or two. As there are so many other excellent choices, use of citrus oils for acne care should be avoided altogether.

As mentioned, essential oils can be dabbed (not rubbed!) directly on pimples. However, for treating any area — and limiting future outbreaks in that area — you’ll want to create a blend of oils in a carrier. While there are many choices, the best are oils that have their own therapeutic activity. The two most well-known are coconut and tamanu nut oils; both are naturally antiseptic, and have been used by some individuals to successfully treat acne alone. Equal parts of these oils will create a simple, effective base to which you’ll add your essential oils.

Creating you blend is a simple process: chose up to 4 essential oils and measure them into an empty bottle. Create a blend with a total of around 5% essential oil concentration: 1 milliliter, or 20 drops, of essential oil in each ounce is a 3% concentration — 7 drops of essential oil in each ounce is 1%. This means you can use around 35 drops total (from a standard glass eyedropper) of essential oils in each ounce of base. You may want to measure the number of drops per ml using a measuring pipette.

On to the recipes! These are the number of drops of essential oil in one ounce of carrier. To make two ounces, simply double the number of drops. So for your base, mix equal parts of virgin coconut, tamanu and grapeseed oils (or just tamanu and coconut, if you don’t mind the thickness). For teenage acne, use 14 drops each tea tree, spike lavender and myrtle. For adult acne with oily skin, use 9 drops each myrtle, tea tree, rosewood and lavender. For adult acne with dry to normal skin, use 7 drops each tea tree, spike lavender, rosewood, myrrh and sandalwood. Please feel free to adjust these recipes, depending on your intuition and the oils you have on hand. Using 3 or more of any of these essential oils together in the carrier oils mentioned should produce effective results for nearly any acne condition.

Acne Treatment Without Antibiotics

September 6th, 2010

Oral antibiotics have been one of the commonly utilized treatments for the acne condition after over the counter treatment methods don’t work effectively for a person’s acne issue. Basically oral antibiotics do two things for your acne treatment. It helps to reduce your acne inflammation and tries to annihilate bacteria in your body (This includes those bacteria that are beneficial to your body). In the process of eliminating bacteria in your body, antibiotics also destroy P.Acnes, which is the bacterium that causes acne.

But, is it the most useful treatment for the acne condition? Or is it inferior as compared to over-the-counter treatments? Below I shall talk about three reasons why you should not use antibiotics treatment, and should never depend on it for long-term acne treatment.

The first vital reason why you must not utilize antibiotics for your acne treatment is for the reason that they will not treat your acne at all. Confused? Yes, it kills bacteria in your body that causes acne, but is it really possible to annihilate all these annoying bacteria that cause acne? Without a doubt, the answer is no.

Bacteria are always present within our body and there is no real way we may get rid of every one of those bacteria that generates acne inside our body. Because it is impossible to eliminate all these bacteria in our body, antibiotics will not work for your acne treatment in a long run. For short-term, maybe it can improve your acne condition, but for long-term, using it for acne treatment is foolish.

Treating acne is like treating flu. There iss no way you can totally eliminate the entire flu virus. The same goes for acne; there is no possibility for you to destroy all the bacteria. And much like flu, the way to keep the bacteria from spreading is to prevent growing inhabitant for it. Destroy homes of the billions and trillions of bacteria instead of trying to nail down each and every one of them.

An additional reason why antibiotics won’t work for a long time is for the reason that when it’s prescribed overtime; bacteria will build up resistance against it. Thus, using oral antibiotics as a long-term acne treatment sounds illogical.

The third reason why you must not utilize antibiotics for your treatment for acne is because once you take in antibiotics, you are actually trying to kill all bacteria in your body, good and bad. As what you have learned from your fifth grade class, there are good bacteria in our body that actually helps out in your body’s digestive system.

By killing the good bacteria, your digestive system will slow down. If your digestive system slows down, toxins in your body will build up. At one point when the toxin in your body is too much for your kidney to handle, it will dump the entire toxin to your skin. Just imagine if toxin were dumped into your skin, acne outbreak will certainly be inevitable.

A Basic Understanding Of Acne

September 6th, 2010

Acne Vulgaris, generally referred to as pimples, is an inflammatory condition of the skin. This condition is really widespread in puberty. As a person reaches their early twenties, it either goes away or decreases. Acne begins thanks to the comedo, an enlarged hair follicle plugged with oil and also bacteria. The comedo is undetectable to the naked eye and is present beneath the surface of a person’s skin. When it gets the proper conditions, it develops into an inflamed lesion. The oil produced in the epidermis helps bacteria to prosper inside of the engorged follicle.

The fundamental factors that cause pimples are the body’s hormones like androgen, that causes extra sebum, germs and infection. For controlling acne breakouts, you are able to carry out the following procedures -

Avoid excessive washing of your skin. It can easily make your unafflicted skin dry, thereby aggravating the acne prone places. Over-washing could possibly also stimulate added oil output.

Stay clear of creams with alcohol to tone the skin. Alcohol is often a strong astringent which strips the upper layer from the skin which cause sebaceous glands to produce far more oil.

Do not ever squeeze or pick the pimple. It forces the acne bacteria deeper into the skin and usually leaves behind a permanent acne scar.

A cleansing is necessary soon after physical exercise. The moisture and heat trapped against the epidermis produces an ideal breeding ground for the spread of germs which could possibly produce additional acne.

Enough sleep plus a life without high amounts of pressure and emotional upheaval can reduce acne breakouts.

Get Clear Skin Fast

September 5th, 2010

It seems like the timing is often not good. Whether it’s a big dance, a major job interview, or a first date, your skin will break out just when you least want it to do so. The query is, how can you get clear skin fast? Scientists are still trying to find solutions to that but there are some quick tips that can help you reduce the redness and completely calm the breakout.

If you have a couple of days before the big event, you can still get clear skin by making a few changes in your diet. First, increase your water intake. Doctors advise at least 64 ounces of water a day. That is equivalent to eight 8 ounce glasses. This will aid clear your skin by keeping you well hydrated, increasing the ability of your blood to get oxygen to your pores. Add fresh fruits and veggies to your meals as well. Lacking some nutrients leads to problems with your complexion. To be sure that you are getting all the nutrients that you need, try to add a multivitamin to your diet. Lastly, take zinc supplements to clear up the redness and inflammation. Zinc is said to be an anti-inflammatory.

Make sure your cleansing routine isn’t jeopardizing your efforts to cure acne and get clear skin fast. Use warm, not hot water to wash your face. Hot water can dry out your skin and make your sebaceous glands produce excessive oil. This often leads to breakouts. You skin may be aggravated if you use harsh cloths and scrubs so avoid using them. Use lukewarm water and a gentle soap to wash your skin two to three times daily to keep it clean. Cosmetics and heavy make-ups will only put all your hard work to waste. Be sure to use only noncomedogenic and nonacnegenic products because they don’t have extra oils that usually clog your pores.

Never pop that pimple! Popping the pimple may seem to clear the pore, but can in fact force the pore’s buildup further into the skin, causing redness, irritation, and, worst of all, more pimples. You can lessen the damage you’ll get if you take the necessary precautions prior to your popping that dreadful pimple. Don’t use your fingernails to squeeze the pimple. What you are supposed to do is to firmly press the skin around it using the pads of your fingers or if possible, use cotton swabs instead. Leave it alone if it doesn’t want to pop. Don’t force it. Your skin will break and extra damage will be done if you keep on forcing it to pop.

It’s impossible to get clear skin in an instant but there are some do-it-yourself acne remedies that cant help you get clear skin fast. Applying a few drops of lemon juice directly on the breakouts can help dry the oil. A mask made of pulped orange skin can also help remove excess oil, as well. Grated cucumber can be used to make a soothing mask. Cucumber is an excellent toner that can soothe your skin and help lessen the redness.

Even though it’s impossible to get clear skin instantly, there are a few steps you can take to get clear skin fast. A healthy diet and a careful cleansing regimen are two simple ways that keep breakouts to a minimum.

Skin Moisturizers For All Of Us

September 3rd, 2010

Skin moisturizers have been around for as long as there is history and probably well before. Cleopatra was known for bathing in milk, Esther was given all the best beauty lotions before she was chosen as queen, beeswax and goose grease were used by farming people everywhere, and the Native Americans introduced European settlers to petroleum jelly.

Facial products for women are probably the most common moisturizers, although skin treatments are sold for every age from infancy on up. Women, however, are often obsessed with constantly looking their best and preventing the onset of wrinkles. For this reason, the market is flooded with creams, lotions, oils, and serums to use on the face.

But for the ladies there are cold creams, rose scented lotions for face, hands, and body, oils for the bath and after the bath, moisturizing masks, skin purifying and tightening gels, vitamin-rich serums, anti-aging secrets, and wrinkle creams. This is just a partial list of the skin moisturizers that can be bought in stores and online, and if you doubt there is a big demand just estimate the money spent on those glossy ads in every woman’s magazine. Millions are spent by manufacturers to combine the very best chemicals and natural compounds for performance, texture, and fragrance; more millions go into the marketing plan; and billions are made in profits.

Cosmetic companies fight for their market share, with beautiful models that show how such and such a product will work for you. The natural marketplace is devoted almost as much to skin care as it is to healthy foods and supplements. There are many recipes for homemade preparations, and everyone has a favorite product or is searching for one.

For the same reason that the products work, they may clog skin. The fear of blocked pores and blackheads leads many to avoid oils and heavy creams. Many skin experts recommend daily removal of dead skin cells with micro abrasion or facial scrubs, followed by toning lotion and a moisturizer that fits your skin, whether it tends to be oily, normal, or dry.

Skin moisturizers can be as simple as almond oil or so complex that the ingredient list takes up half the label. No matter what your preference is, the right product is out there for you.

Acne Treatment

September 2nd, 2010

It is usual these days to witness a lot of people popping up on sites, forums, blogs and other social networking website asking experts how to treat their acne. Many of them have been searching for the holy treatment that would just work for them. But the fact is that each treatment operates differently for everybody.

It seems that the reason why individuals are stuck with acne is due to the fact that they don’t have the right treatment. The fault always seems to lie on the treatment. I agree that this is partly the cause for the high number of people suffering from acne. But, the main reason why acne sufferers are still acne sufferers is simply because they don’t have the patient in their treatment. Being impatient is in every human blood; everyone wants instant effect and wants to cure their acne immediately. However, reality is cruel. Instant remedy for acne is either rare or is extinct.

The primary reason why companies may earn huge sums of money is due to the fact that they target acne patients who really desires fast results. The social effect to clear acne quick opens this luxury market for companies. Because of this, long traditional yet effective acne treatment has been neglected from acne patients and self proclaimed fast quick acne treatment are market favorite purchase.

The problem is that, if those so called “quick treatment” works, why are there still so many individuals trapped with acne all this while? Long term treatment that originally works was abandoned by those “faked” treatments. Why is that so? This is just because individuals lack the patience to take care of their acne in the long run.

An additional scenario that you might be familiar with is popping of zits or pimples. A number of people out there wasted their efforts to treat their acne once they popped their pimple. Due to a minute of temptation, or foolishness, they popped the zit out. The weeks which they undergo intense treatment are wasted. The weeks of treatment has come to nothing and this factor could be one of the main factors why so many people are still stuck with acne. If the key to real estate success is “Location! Location! Location!”, then the key to acne treatment success would be “Patience! Patience! Patience!”.
