Laser Lipo – Disadvantages To Be Aware Of Before Signing Up For This Treatment

March 11th, 2010

Losing weight using non-surgical methods can be a long drawn process and it is easy to get discouraged midway, and hence, liposuction being quick and effective has become so popular.

Liposuction is a tried and tested surgical weight loss procedure, but it has the risk of side effects along with some other disadvantages like a longer recovery time. However, the new method of liposuction by laser technology, laser liposuction is a better alternative both in terms of safety and convenience.

The body fat is first melted by laser beams and then removed in this type of liposuction surgery. With the help of thin fibre tubes heated through laser, the body fat is liquefied. The fat thus melted is extracted from the body by the surgeon, and any remnant fat is absorbed by the patient s lymph glands.

Complications associated with normal surgery like bleeding, bruising or pain do not arise in this procedure, making it a favoured procedure. Sensitive body tissues are not affected in this procedure as the lasers are inserted with an anaesthetic and a special salt solution.

Another advantage is that laser liposuction tightens the skin, which gives an additional benefit to those with loose skin, such as post-pregnancy women. What makes laser liposuction the most sought after procedure is that the patient can be up and running immediately after the surgery and can join his workplace in about two days time, whereas in traditional liposuction he may have to remain confined to bed at home for weeks before he can get back to his feet.

But laser liposuction too has a few small disadvantages. Being a minimally invasive procedure, it is more effective for targeting fat in areas like arms, shoulders and the face, and not in areas with excess fat deposits like stomach or thighs. Another issue is that its long term side effects have not yet been noticed by surgeons as the procedure itself is a very new innovation. Lastly, laser liposuction is definitely not the treatment for people who are not financially well-off as it quite an expensive affair.
