Caring For Your Skin: Pointers To Keep Pimples At Bay

March 23rd, 2012

A pimple crops up when the pores in the skin become obstructed with sebum which normally keeps the skin moist and supple. In such conditions, skin bacteria normally found on the skin will proliferate, and trigger an inflammatory response. This will manifest as a reddened, often elevated nodule which we call as a pimple. A number of factors are thought to cause and exacerbate breakouts, namely, genes, stress, hormonal imbalance, and taking in foods with high glycemic index. Although acne is most common during puberty, adults can also have them. Below are some tips to help prevent breakouts and how to treat them.

Washing your face twice daily with warm water and mild soap is one of the ways on how you can keep pimples at bay. Experts strongly advise against scrubbing, overwashing, and using harsh soaps as this can irritate the skin and even prompt your skin to produce more oil. For ladies, it is important that you remove any makeup prior to sleeping. When buying makeup and other beauty products, go for those that are noncomedogenic.

You should also refrain from touching your face with your fingers or allowing it to come into contact with surfaces that collect dirt and bacteria, such as tables.  When you have an inflamed acne, prevent yourself from picking or manipulating it, as this can push infected material further into the skin. If you have big, unsightly pimple days before an important event, go to your dermatologist. She can remove the acne and prevent scarring at the same time.

You can find a number of OTC solutions and creams that are made specifically for acne prevent. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests that you apply products which have the active ingredient benzoyl peroxide after you have washed your face to remove excess oil, and bacteria. You may also use solutions that contain salicylic acid and these can treat acne by drying them. If you think these OTC products are ineffective, you should go to your dermatologist. Your dermatologist can prescribe gels or creams, or even start you on hormone or antibiotic therapy, if hormonal imbalance or infectious processes are suspected, respectively If you’re on prescription acne medication, you should be religious in taking them, and finish the entire course of treatment, unless there are any adverse reactions. If you experience adverse reactions, you should consult your skin doctor right away so changes to your management can be made. Depending on the severity of your acne, the dermatologist may also prescribe dermabrasion, laser therapy, or incision and drainage.

You have to follow a well-balance diet too, and refrain from eating food items that are high in fat and simple sugars. You also have to find ways to reduce your stress levels. Increasing your physical activity by exercising and getting ample amounts of rest and sleep will help you manage your stress effectively.
